St George's Gardens
One of Tower Hamlets' least known historic public gardens. There are entrances to the gardens on The Highway and Cable Street. The gardens are the the former churchyard grounds of St George-in-the-East. The church is one of three in the borough designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor. The others are Christ Church, Spitalfields and St Anne's, Limehouse. The gardens were opened to the public in 1875.
Major refurbishment was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. New paths, planting and grass areas were laid out. Significant heritage features including monuments and walls were conserved and repaired.
Look for the heritage panels in the gardens to find out more about their history.
St George-in-the-East Gardens is 1.19 hectares in area size.
