Wapping Youth Centre ribbon cutting
A youth centre in Wapping has reopened its doors to young people in Tower Hamlets after undergoing two months of renovations.
The building at 20 Trench Street, has been a longstanding pillar of the Wapping community, and has received a much-needed face lift, transforming it into a brighter space for young people.
The newly renovated facility will now be offering a wider variety of activities, including music taster sessions and access to podcasting equipment.
To celebrate the reopening, Young Tower Hamlets, the council’s youth service, hosted a reopening party attended by young people, families, youth workers, and Deputy Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Cllr Maium Talukdar.
Cllr Maium Talukdar, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Education, Youth, and Lifelong Learning, said:
“It’s amazing to see so many young people enjoying the facilities. These youth centres are hubs for our young people to have a safe space away from home and enjoy time with friends. They’re also here to offer new experiences, support, and guidance to young people with the help of our fantastic youth workers.
“Not only is the council moving towards its goal of having a youth centre in every ward by opening new centres, but we’re also focused on ensuring young people have the best facilities across the board.
“Our £13.7 million investment isn’t just about bringing in new facilities, but also upgrading and improving ones.
“Wapping Youth Centre is a long-standing space within the community, and we’re excited to be giving it a new lease of life for the next generation.”
The renovations are part of the council’s £13.7million investment into Young Tower Hamlets, including a commitment to provide a safe space for young people in every ward.
With the reopening of Wapping Youth Centre, there are now 18 council-run youth centres available in the borough.
Each of these centres provides a free hub for young people aged 11-19, or up to 25 with SEND, to discover new passions, feel empowered, and enjoy a range of activities, workshops, trips and more.
Wapping Youth Centre is open every Monday and Tuesday from 3pm to 7:30pm and Thursday from 3pm to 6pm.
