Council Tax Carer Disregard

If you are a carer who provides voluntary care to someone you live with, you may qualify for a Council Tax disregard or discount.

Who may qualify for a Carer Disregard for Council Tax?

To apply for a Carer Disregard you must:

  • be a voluntary carer.
  • provide at least 35 hours of care a week.
  • live in the same property as the cared for person.
  • the property must be your sole or main residence.

Who is not eligible for a Carer Disregard?

You are not eligible for a carer disregard if the cared for person is:

  • your child under the age of 18 years old.
  • your spouse/civil partner (married or unmarried).
  • living in a different property to you.

What document proof do you need to apply?

The person you care for must be entitled to certain state benefits for you to qualify.

You will need to upload proof of at least one of these benefits:

  • Any rate of Attendance Allowance.
  • The middle or highest rate care component of a Disability Living Allowance.
  • The standard or enhanced rate of the daily living component of Personal Independence Payment.
  • The highest amount of increase in Disablement Pension.
  • An increase in Constant Attendance Allowance Armed Forces Independence Payment.
