PSPO - illegal street trading
Public Spaces Protection Order - illegal street trading
The council has recently introduced a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) to tackle illegal street trading in the car park of 93-101 Greenfield Road, E1 1EJ, during Ramadan 2025.
Why has a PSPO been introduced?
There has been an increase in illegal street trading around 93-101 Greenfield Road during the Ramadan period. The council and police have received complaints from residents and local businesses, who have asked for intervention to prevent illegal trading taking place, and associated issues.
Illegal street trading encourages large numbers of people to visit an area and often the capacity of the area is not able to cope with the number of people who visit. This can cause the production of large amounts of waste and litter both from trading activities and visitors. Legitimate businesses also have their trading affected; creating unfair competition from illegal traders that are not compliant with the law.
Other issues caused by the increase in numbers of people visiting includes noise nuisance and an increase in illegal parking which causes congestion to local traffic.
Consequences of breaching the PSPO
Anyone who is caught trading in this area without a licence can be fined up to £100 and have their equipment seized.
The PSPO is in place during the Ramadan period annually until 31 December 2027.
