About trading standards
The council's trading standards office advises on and enforces a wide range of laws designed to protect consumers in the borough. A consumer is anyone purchasing goods or services from any retail outlet, such as a restaurant, shop or market stall.
The most important laws that trading standards and consumer services officers enforce are the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and the Consumer Credit Act 1974 as amended. Both pieces of legislation have proved to be effective in outlawing untrue claims made about goods and services sold to the public. The acts are a major force both for the protection of the consumer and in ensuring fair trading.
If you think you have been a victim of a trader or traders acting illegally in the borough, then tower hamlets trading standards officers are on hand to help you. If you experience this kind of problem with goods or services then please contact us in confidence to discuss the matter.

Under age sales
Trading standards deal with under-age sales of some products (such as tobacco, fireworks and videos) and work with the police to deal with under-age alcohol sales.
