Successful summer for new council funded café in Island Gardens

Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation cuts the ribbon with council officer, cafe operator Gianluca Colini and staff

A new café in Island Gardens funded by Tower Hamlets Council was officially opened by Cllr Kamrul Hussain, Cabinet Member for Culture and Recreation.

Rotunda Café has been open since April and is already a popular choice for the local community. It has been built on the site of the former park café, which was run-down and had to be closed in March 2021.

The new café has been funded using Section 106 and Neighbourhood CIL which is collected by the council from developers through the planning process. This money is used to improve the area where the building is taking place. It can include paying for things like new schools or health centres, upgrades to parks or investing in affordable housing.

Cllr Hussain said: “We are keen to invest in our parks and public spaces for the benefit of the community. It’s important that people have great facilities on their doorsteps. Tower Hamlets is a built-up borough, and we need to make sure our greenspaces are welcoming and have good features for families to enjoy.

“It was my pleasure to meet Mr Colini and his staff and officially open Rotunda Café, and I am happy to see that it is already doing well and popular with customers.”

Tower Hamlets has many diverse parks, gardens and open spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.

We currently hold a record number of awards for our parks including 14 Green Flag Awards and eight gold awards from London in Bloom and were the overall winners in four categories. Victoria Park holds the People’s Choice recognition in the Green Flag Top 10 parks in the country.

We have opportunities in parks across the borough for vendors who have Public Liability Insurance and Food Hygiene Certificate. If you are interested in applying, please email parks@towerhamlets.gov.uk
