New educational initiative launches at the Fruit and Wool Exchange

OMGEDUCATION

An independent school has secured a contract to provide employment and skills services at a unit at the London Fruit & Wool Exchange (LFWE) leased by Tower Hamlets Council.

The school, OMG Education, has a focus on creativity and the arts and works with families, communities, and external organisations to establish comprehensive support systems and provide equal opportunities for all students.

The official opening occurred on 6 September, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and speeches.

Cllr Musthak Ahmed, Tower Hamlets Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and Skills, said:

“This initiative exemplifies our commitment to a community wealth-building strategy, using our assets to deliver essential services that can significantly enhance the lives of numerous residents throughout the borough.

“I am confident that OMG Education will flourish in the historic Fruit and Wool Exchange building, and I eagerly anticipate the positive outcomes they will achieve as they commence their vital work with our local community.”

Tower Hamlets Council obtained the unit in 2018 through a Section 106 agreement.

This is a legal contract between a developer and the local council requiring the developer to contribute to the community either by money or providing community amenities.

The Council initiated an open tender process in 2023 to find a new delivery partner. In the interim, Poplar HARCA occupied the site as a temporary space until a partner was selected.

In return for a reduced rental agreement, OMG Education has pledged to engage with a minimum of 1,000 unemployed residents, provide upskilling and training for at least 817 individuals, and create personal action plans for no fewer than 1,000 residents.

The engagement efforts will prioritise residents from minority groups, with a target of at least 30% of participants entering employment or an apprenticeship programme.

Jamal Miah, Founder and Director of OMG Education, said:

"At OMG Education, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to thrive. Our innovative curriculum, focused on music, creativity, and practical experiences, is designed to help students overcome challenges and reach their full potential.

“We are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where students can learn, grow, and build the confidence they need to succeed."
