Statement on civil disorder across the country from the Executive Mayor Lutfur Rahman:

The violence erupting in towns and cities across the UK is appalling and reminiscent of the darkest chapters in modern British history. Everyone, everywhere deserves to live in peace and dignity.

Leaders and public figures must recognise that adopting the rhetoric of the far-right does nothing but divide and destroy our communities.

At this troubled moment, we must stand up for one another, protect those facing racist violence and begin to build a more equitable future.
Tower Hamlets is a place of unity and no place for hate. We are proud to be one of the most diverse places in the country with strong community cohesion.

Although we have not seen issues of public disorder in Tower Hamlets like some other parts of the country, we remain vigilant working with our communities through our Interfaith Forum and Tension Monitoring Group, which includes the police. We are also conducting additional patrolsaround the borough to provide a visible and reassuring presence.
