Hospice Services
St. Joseph’s Hospice provides specialist care and support for people with an advancing or life threatening condition such as cancer, their families and carers. The focus of care provided by the hospice is palliative – concerned with maintaining and improving the quality of life of the patient and supporting their family and friends during the illness and in bereavement.
Care at St. Joseph’s Hospice is available to anyone aged 18 years or over. Normally people cared for by the hospice are within the last year of their life, but not always. Individuals most likely to benefit from care at the hospice are those with complex or multiple problems arising from their condition.
In addition St. Joseph’s Hospice cares for children and young people who face bereavement.
Care by the hospice is provided in a number of different settings:
At home – by a team of specialist nurses, doctors and social workers who will work with the patient’s GP and District Nurse to enable people to stay at home and die there if they wish
In one of the inpatient wards at the hospice, normally for a period from a few days to two weeks
in outpatient and day services provided at the hospice for people who are at home.
Care in these settings may be concerned with the control of distressing symptoms such as pain, respite care, rehabilitation or care in the last few days of life.
It includes support for family members and carers during the illness and in bereavement. In addition patients and their families and carers can access advice about the illness and how to best cope with it if they wish.
The hospice is open at all times and patients under the care of the hospice can expect access to advice and help 24 hours a day. Normally patients are accepted for care during ordinary office hours in week days, via referral from their family doctor or a hospital consultant.
If patients wish to refer themselves the hospice will discuss with their family doctor the appropriateness of the referral.
