Almost 300 new affordable homes - including more than 100 family-sized homes - have been given the go-ahead by Tower Hamlets Council.

Members of the council’s Strategic Development Committee last week approved changes to the Bow Common Gas Works development to provide an additional 210 affordable homes, including 67 homes with three or four bedrooms.

Outline planning permission was granted for Bow Common Gas Works in April 2022.

The revised masterplan also sees the total number of homes increase (private, affordable and rented) from a maximum of 1,450 to a maximum of 1,764 units.

At the same committee meeting, an application for a 35-storey building in Selsdon Way, Isle of Dogs, providing 87 affordable homes – 35 of which will be family-sized – was approved.

The site in Selsdon Way is currently used as a car park, office space which is temporarily occupied as additional accommodation by a school, and disused rooftop sports pitches.

Plans were approved to demolish the existing buildings and build a 35-storey block providing a total of 307 new homes and a community hub.

35% of the homes will be affordable, of which 70% will be affordable rented homes. 10% of homes will be wheelchair accessible.

Cllr Kabir Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Inclusive Development and Housebuilding, said:

"We have made it a priority to ensure more affordable family-sized homes in the borough, and we urge developers to reflect this in their planning applications.

"The Council has been working with developers to ensure the right balance of housing, which is essential to addressing waiting lists and providing more affordable options. By working together, we can create more homes where people can live with the security and comfort they need to build a stable future.”
