Tower Hamlets Council’s Careers & Social Mobility Team is a finalist in the 2024 UK Social Mobility Awards (SOMOs).
The council’s Careers & Social Mobility Team (C&SM) has been shortlisted in the Leadership category.
The team was set up in July 2022 to enhance career aspirations, social mobility, and opportunities for young people in Tower Hamlets, spanning from primary school to those aged 25.
It has created a diverse array of programmes, resources, interventions, and activities, all of which have been met with high praise and have delivered positive outcomes.
From January 2023, the team has engaged with more than 9,500 residents, with 280 employers and more than 760 business volunteers giving up their time.
Lutfur Rahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets Council, said: “Our work is pivotal to ensuring that everyone in Tower Hamlets gets the opportunities to fulfil their potential.
“Winning this award would be an incredible honour and validation of the dedication and passion we bring to our work and the change we are making in the borough.”
The SOMO awards were established to recognise and celebrate forward-thinking organisations that are actively creating positive social change for their employees and in their communities, by embedding social mobility initiatives into their core business strategy.
Since their launch in 2017, the SOMOs have become an important platform for promoting social mobility in the UK and have attracted entries from leading organisations across the country, spanning multiple sectors.
The awards provide valuable recognition for organisations who are leading the way in social mobility.
Winners for the awards are determined by an independent judging panel, made up of leading figures from business, charity, and the public sector, chaired by the HM Lord Lieutenant of London, Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE.
The winners will be announced at an in-person awards gala in London on Thursday 3 October 2024.
