The new Youth Council held their first meeting on 11 January 2024 to pick their roles within cabinet. The roles picked by the Youth Council will determine which councillor each deputy will shadow during their two year term:
- Iffat Bhuiyan – Lead for Education will be shadowing the Deputy Mayor, Mohammed Maium Miah Talukdar
- Khadija Dirir – Lead for Environment will be shadowing Cllr Kabir Hussain
- Ziyad Baksh – Lead for Community will shadowing Cllr Kabir Ahmed
- Fatima Omar – Lead for Health & Wellbeing will shadowing Cllr Gulam Kibria Choudhury
- Rochelle Lewis-Geary – Lead for Social Economic Growth Cllr Abdul Wahid
This meeting follows the Youth Council inauguration event in December 2023, where it was announced that sixteen-year-old Fetuma Hassan would run as the new Young Mayor of Tower Hamlets alongside the five deputies mentioned above.
The Youth Council are the voice of young people in the borough. During their two-year term, they will work closely with local young people and services to understand their issues and raise concerns by:
- representing young people locally and nationally
- getting involved in the Youth Council and other local youth forums
- attending events and organising special projects
- influencing and steering strategic decisions that affect young people in the borough
