Free holiday clubs full of fun activities and nutritious food are on offer for children during the winter break to give families a helping hand during Christmas.
As part of Tower Hamlets Council’s Cost of Living Help campaign, the free Winter Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) scheme, funded by the Department for Education, runs from December 27 to 5 January and is open to children aged 4-16.
Children eligible for and claiming benefits-related free school meals can sign up now. The clubs also cater for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEN).
Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman said:
“The school holidays can create extra financial burdens for some families, especially those on lower incomes who will struggle to pay for organised events and activities for their children.
“Children can also experience social isolation if they are unable to join their friends and mix with other young people during the extended holiday period, which is why it is important we provide schemes like this.”
The council’s warm hubs are also open for residents to use during the cold snap. They are based at our Idea Stores and libraries and provide a safe space to keep warm and socialise.
Refreshments will be provided and staff will also be on hand to signpost to advice and support services if needed.
The council’s latest edition of the Cost of Living Help booklet is also out, the 28 page booklet is filled with advice, information and listings of food clubs, advice centres and expert tips on mental health and wellbeing. You can pick up a copy from the Town Hall, Idea Stores and partner organisations.
As part of a multi-million Household Support Fund package provided by the Government, the council has introduced many new schemes to help residents through the cost of living crisis including our Community Cupboard scheme which launched last month.
The Community Cupboard provides everyday essentials free like nappies, wipes, toothpaste, bodywash and handwash to those who have been referred to the service. The Community Cupboards will be based at our Children and Family Centres.
Cllr Saied Ahmed, cabinet member for Resources and Cost of Living added:
“The winter months can be cold and lonely and that is why that it is important to check up on your neighbours and let them know about our many schemes and projects like the Warm Hubs and food banks.
“We have recently done a staff donation drive at the Town Hall where officers have gifted luxury food items and toys to be distributed to families who may be struggling during this time of year. It is important to think about our neighbours and to provide a helping hand where you can.”
