Council tax bill

Tower Hamlets residents and local business owners will soon be receiving their council tax bills for the year ahead.

The council sends around 162,500 council tax and business rates bills between February and March (the start of the new financial year).

Once you receive your bill

The easiest way to manage and pay your council tax is to set up an online council tax account. Using this, you can:

  • Check the balance and details of your account
  • Apply for any discounts or exemptions, for example single person discount
  • Make a one-off payment or set up a direct debit
  • Request a refund
  • Tell us if you move or your details change

By using an online account and switching to paperless billing, you can also help us to be more sustainable and reduce our impact on the environment.

How we spend your council tax

The council’s net expenditure in 2022-23 will be £389.473m, which includes income generated through rents, investments and charges for services. The total net expenditure is funded through retained business rates, council tax, reserves and specific grants.
