Lithium battery fires

Lithium batteries have caused fires in the rubbish lorries. Please do not put batteries in your waste or recycling bin. All batteries (including lithium batteries from e-bikes and e-scooters and other re-chargeable devices) can be taken to the Reuse and Recycling Centre at Northumberland Wharf.

Terms and conditions for pre-paid sacks and cardboard stickers

  • All waste must be contained securely to stop it causing litter.
  • Sacks must be tied and /or sealed with tape and not exceed 6kg.
  • Waste cardboard must be flattened and tied or taped up in bundles that don’t exceed 6kg.
  • You must ensure that your cardboard is not contaminated with any other waste. 
  • Each flattened cardboard bundle musthave an authorised pre-paid adhesive sticker for it to be collected.
  • Cardboard put inside a large whole cardboard box will not be collected.
  • All bagged waste must be in pre-paid authorised sacks for it to be collected.
  • Red sacks are for residual (non-recyclable) waste.
  • Clear sacks with a red panel are for recyclable waste.
  • Waste must only be placed out for collection on the days and during the times set out on your schedule.
  • The waste you place out on a certain day/time must be for the correct type of collection that is scheduled. (For example, no red residual waste sacks should be placed out on a recycling only collection day/time.)
  • Never place sharp objects directly into a plastic sack.Wrap sharp items up in paper first to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Food waste from restaurants and cafes should be double bagged to stop liquids escaping. You can use a plain black refuse sack inside a pre-paid sack to do this.
  • All waste placed out for collection must be left directly outside your premises unless an authorised person instructs you not to.
  • Place your waste out in a considerate way that does not obstruct the footway and carriageway.
  • Only waste covered by the ‘Waste Type’ categories outlined in your Duty of Care Waste Transfer Note will be collected from your premises.
  • You should never dispose of oils, acids, chemicals, asbestos, clinical waste, raw poultry, or raw fish in your normal collection. You must arrange for these to be collected by a specialist registered waste carrier.
  • You must ensure that authorised pre-paid sacks and stickers are re-ordered regularly.
  • We will aim to deliver your order within two working days after receipt of payment. Please note, we do not deliver on either Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays.
  • You must ensure that you always have a sufficient stock of sacks and stickers to comply with our Duty of Care responsibilities.
  • Pre-paid coloured refuse sacks and stickers are not transferable. They must not be re-sold, passed onto, or used by any third party under any circumstances.
