Let it flow! The Boishakhi Mela will be launched in style by a sparkling parade of music, song, and dance, and the streets will come alive with a carnival of colour which is centered around this year's theme – the Rivers of Bangladesh.
To celebrate the life and activity of rivers across Bangladesh, there will be dazzling displays of the natural world on and around the water. Children will carry pictures of silvery fish, traditional fishing boats in bright colours, shady mangrove trees and more.
Floats will include the tremendous tiger, a brilliant boat (nowka) which is new for 2019, as well as our giant and glittering DJ turtle playing beats all the way from Brick Lane to Weavers Fields. Don't miss the high octane Naz & Bolly Flex who will be wowing spectators with an explosive demonstration of the best moves in Bollywood dance.
Acclaimed outdoor arts company Emergency Exit Arts have been working with a number of local artists, schools, youth and community groups to get them involved in the creative processes behind the procession. Schools including Columbia Road Primary School, Mayflower Primary School, Mulberry School and Olga Primary School have taken part in a workshop programme through which pupils have been able to create beautiful artwork including flags, props and costumes which are showcased on the parade.
The parade starts at 11am in Buxton Street, by Allen Gardens. It turns left on to Brick Lane, left again on to Old Montague Street, then on to Vallance Road before arriving at Weavers Fields for 12noon to officially open the event.
Celebrate the summer in style at the Boishakhi Mela. An exciting mix of modern and popular entertainment from Bangladesh and the local community. A great, free day out for the whole family.
